Budgie Parakeet for Sale

Looking for a budgie parakeet? Birds Jungle raises healthy, hand-fed budgies in a range of colors. They’re friendly, easy to care for, and one of the best choices for a first pet bird. Every budgie parakeet ships safely across the US and Canada with a live-arrival guarantee.

What Is a Budgie Parakeet? (Budgie vs. Parakeet Explained)

A budgie parakeet is a small, colorful bird from Australia, and a member of the wider parrot family. “Budgie” is short for budgerigar, and it belongs to a bigger bird family called parakeets. So a budgie is a type of parakeet, but not every parakeet is a budgie. Other parakeets include lovebirds, Quaker parakeets, and lineolated parakeets.

In the US, most pet stores use “budgie” and “parakeet” to mean the exact same bird. That’s why you’ll often see them listed together as “budgie/parakeet.” At Birds Jungle, when we say budgie parakeet, we mean the classic American parakeet, the small, friendly bird most people picture when they think of a pet bird.

You may also hear about the English budgie. It’s the same species as the American parakeet, just bred to be larger with fuller feathers, mostly for bird shows.

Budgie Parakeet Colors

One of the best things about budgies is their color range. At Birds Jungle, our budgie parakeets come in:

  • Blue budgie parakeet
  • Green budgie parakeet (the natural, wild color)
  • Yellow budgie parakeet
  • White budgie parakeet
  • Grey budgie parakeet
  • Violet budgie parakeet (rare)

A quick note: true black and true red budgies don’t exist as natural colors. The darkest budgies are grey or violet. If you’ve seen a photo labeled “black” or “red” budgie online, it’s usually a different parakeet species or an edited photo.

Can Budgie Parakeets Talk?

Yes. Budgie parakeets can learn to talk, and males often pick up words faster than females. They won’t sound as clear as an African Grey, but many budgies learn 10 to 20 words or short phrases with daily practice. Besides talking, budgies make soft chirps, whistles, and warbling songs when they’re happy and relaxed.

Budgie Parakeet Lifespan and Care

A budgie parakeet typically lives 5 to 8 years with good care, and some reach 10 or more. To help yours live a long, healthy life:

  • Feed a mix of seeds, pellets, and fresh vegetables
  • Use a cage at least 18 x 18 x 18 inches for one bird
  • Add a few toys and perches of different widths
  • Book a check-up with an avian vet once a year

Ready to set up the habitat? Shop our full bird cage collection, sized for parakeets and other small birds. We also carry bird feeders and bird baths if you’re setting up an outdoor aviary space alongside your indoor cage.

Male vs. Female Budgie Parakeets

You can tell a budgie’s gender by looking at the cere, the small patch of skin above the beak. Males usually have a blue or purple cere. Females have a tan, brown, or crusty white cere, especially when they’re ready to breed.

FAQ

Is a budgie the same as a parakeet?

Yes. In the US, “parakeet” almost always refers to a budgie. They’re the same bird.

What’s the difference between a budgie and a parakeet?

“Budgie” is short for budgerigar, one specific parakeet species. “Parakeet” is a broader term for many small, long-tailed parrots. Every budgie is a parakeet, but not every parakeet is a budgie.

How long do budgie parakeets live?

5 to 8 years on average, and up to 10+ years with excellent care.

Can budgie parakeets talk?

Yes. Many budgies, especially males, learn to say words and short phrases.

What colors do budgie parakeets come in?

Blue, green, yellow, white, grey, and violet are the true budgie colors. Black and red budgies are not a real natural color.

Are English budgies different from American parakeets?

They’re the same species. English budgies are bred larger with fuller feathers; American parakeets are the smaller, more common pet bird.
